National Leaders of Governance (NLGs) are experiences Chairs of Governing Boards and Trust Boards
All NLGs have been through a rigorous designation process from the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), a part of the Department for Education (DfE), to demonstrate that we have the skills, experience and attributes to be a National Leader of Governance. All NLGs are either actively chairing governing boards, or have done so within the last five years. We have experience across the team of all types of educational establishments, from small village primary schools to large secondary schools and colleges, including church schools, LA maintained schools, single academies, multi academy trusts and federations.
We take responsibility for leading good practices in governance and helping improve capacity andcapability within the governance system. This means we provide help and support to help improve governance for all types of educational establishments. Our goal is to mentor and coach individuals or governing boards so they are equipped to provide effective governance of their organisation. As system leaders for governance NLGs work with other system leaders in the education system, such as National Leaders of Education (NLEs), Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs), and Local Leaders of Education (LLEs) as part of school to school support provided by Teaching School Alliances. We are funded by the NCTL and come under the remit of the regional Teaching Schools Council.
Our goal is to deliver proactive guidance to improve the quality of school governance in our region, as well as providing support to governing boards as they need it.
Each NLG is our region is affiliated with a local Teaching School Alliances (TSAs) that has been designated a Governance Hub. NLGs are able to support governors or governing boards anywhere across our region. See Our Region for more details. NLGs will provide support to anyone involved in governance of schools and much of this support is free of charge.See Our Services for more details. NLGs are recognised as having a significant impact on the quality of governance in our region.
